Hello from New York City! I hope you are all doing well and enjoying this sunny, warm weather. Meiko and I are having a blast living on the Upper East Side together. Come visit us! There's so much to do here (obviously), especially when the weather's nice!
So here's an update on what we've both been doing (aside from lying around Central Park and trying to get tan):
I am currently working as an archivist at Marlborough Gallery in mid-town. It's been a fantastic experience for me, thus far. I am responsible for assisting the gallery's sales directors, updating our ever-expanding library of artist monographs and catalogues, organizing our inventory system (which is also constantly growing), and handling artist press and biographies. I especially love working at Marlborough because I get to meet and talk with the artists that come in and out of the gallery on a daily basis.
Business has been slow, unfortunately, but preparation for three upcoming shows at both our mid-town and Chelsea locations has kept my coworkers and me very busy. The gallery specializes in Modern and Contemporary art, and over the years it has shown artists such as Francis Bacon, Robert Motherwell, Mark Rothko, Ad Reinhardt, and Lucian Freud. We have locations abroad in Madrid, Monaco, Barcelona, Zurich, Chile, Switzerland, London (where the Gallery was first established), among others. Check out the website if you have time. It’s actually kind of crappy (I apologize for that) but our graphics department is in the process of designing a new one (which will hopefully be up and running in a few months): http://www.marlboroughgallery.com/
Meiko has just completed her first year working at International Peace Institute (IPI), a non-profit research and policy think tank that works closely with the United Nations community. She is an events officer in the external relations department and works on planning meetings, conference, cocktails, retreats, etc, both at IPI and abroad. She has organized a small conference in London and will go to Kigali, Rwanda on May 21st for a high level conference with senior African Union Commission leaders. Meiko has done quite a bit of traveling. Aside from her business trip to London, she’s been to Argentina with the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team, Sweden, and Milan. I’m so jealous that she got to go to Milan especially! I miss Italy terribly! Meiko is still keeping up with field hockey. She’s been assisting the Stevens Institute of Technology team since the fall of 2007. She really enjoys working with this team because the girls are mature, competitive, and extremely motivated despite the fact that they are only Division 3. In fact, this past season (’08) was the first year Stevens hockey made it to the second round of the NCAA tournament! This spring Meiko is still playing recreational hockey for Greenwich Field Hockey Club in New York City. The club is made up of men and women of all different ages who come from all over the world. She has met many interesting people and has made some good friends through the club.
